Wild Speculation: Convergence Dev Chat Edition!
I hopped back on CoC for an Oblivion Campaign with a friend of mine partially in anticipation of the new Convergence CID and partially because the Void Archon should be here next week. It's honestly been a lot of fun with some good back and forth thus far. We're officially half way through the campaign and I'm looking forward to every time we get to play.
Much to my surprise, the CoC CID is going to start in less than a week (Nov 4th), and yesterday we were treated to an extended Dev Chat where they showed off artwork and gave some rules previews.
You can watch the video on YouTube here.
You can watch the video on YouTube here.
I posted a summary of the Dev Chat on the Convergence Facebook group you can check out here, but honestly watch the video those guys are great.
Because I'm not a patient man and because wild speculation is fun as hell I wanted to write about what possibilities have me the most excited and the few places where I'm a bit worried.
Two Guns, Range 10, POW 12, Volume Fire (+1 Hit and Damage vs. Med Base, +2 for Large/Huge bases), Reload 1 on each gun. Flight.
Can you imagine Orion's feat turn with a swarm of these? It will simply gun down entire units worth of models, including things like Satyxis Raiders. Oh and vs. huge bases it's easy to get this thing to POW16.
The only weakness is that it's not a spray, so range limiting abilities will apply to it, making it as sad into Kruger2, Old Witch2/3 and a few other bits. Still, if it's fast then this can be mitigated.

We don't know it's points cost yet, which will be a big deal on what this model can really do.
Do you like taking damage buffs and/or a melee beater in ranged focused lists? Because Gaspy4 will do that for you!
Gaspy is in Convergence and he brings Dark Shroud to everything in his battlegroup. He can take Cryx(!), Merc, or CoC jacks. He also has his Iron Litch stats with DEF 15, ARM 17, and 18 Boxes with 5 focus, with the ability to claim souls to get even more focus.
Many casters in Convergence can bring a +2 damage buff for jacks, and Gaspy probably brings a more reliable Dark Shroud application than taking a Void Archon. As such it seems almost trivial to swing +4 damage on a target.
What's better is that he gives Bloodthirsty to all construct models in his command range, extending the threat of jacks and infantry alike vs. living models. So he brings a conditional speed up and a damage buff to Convergence, plus whatever the other two spells are on his card (it's revealed he has Caustic Mist clouds).
Gaspy has always had MAT 6 and RAT 3 and my guess is that will stay to keep him reasonable and to not make an obvious melee addition able to effectively run ranged vectors.
While he is being added to Clockwork Legions and the new Strange Bedfellows themes he's the only Mercenary unit Convergence can take, so he's easily available in Destruction Initiative without sacrificing your Merc solo option. He will be expensive at 14 points PLUS taking a jack, but honestly 1 or 2 Stalkers with him seems like the de-facto standard, though there definitely seems to be a case for taking some other Cryx heavies or even Merc Heavies that can do ranged roles if you want them.
Stalkers just to apply Dark Shroud reliably from a million miles away just seem incredibly obvious and it's not hard to get them up to PS16 with Blessed and Grievous Wounds, and they have extended control, meaning they can be up to 20" from Gaspy.
Imagine Orion with a bunch of the Tesselators and other jacks, with Gaspy providing Stalkers for applying Dark Shroud when the melee gets joined, or to apply Dark Shroud to a huge base, further buffing our ranged output. Heck if you want to go the Assimilator route, you can apply the +2 damage to any target.
Still, Gaspy4 with just a single Stalker would cost 22 points, likely 30 points with two stalkers. That's not a cheap package, but it seems like it could seriously add a ton of value.
We know a bit less on the specifics of Nemo4 beyond the fact that he's a Protoss Looking Battle Engine with 30 damage boxes, a good gun, and the ability to take Cygnar, Merc, and CoC jacks.
So why am I excited? Well Nemo1, 2, and -1 (the alt CoC caster) were all MAT 5 RAT 5, Nemo3 was MAT 5 RAT 6. I'm guessing Nemo4 will probably be MAT 5 and RAT 5, making him very likely to focus on bringing ranged jacks to CoC lists that don't want to take ranged heavies in the Battlegroup because the caster has a low RAT: Axis and Lucant, I'm looking at you.
That's not all he's good for, there are certainly some other jacks that may be interesting from Cygnar that immediately come to mind: A Centurion in a Lucant list seems really rough to deal with on Feat turn, and then there are all the ranged lights in Cygnar.
Nemo will have limited applications because he will only be in Destruction Initiative and Strange Bedfellows with no ability to get him into Clockwork Legions.
Still, I can see applications for wanting to take him in an Axis DI list where he'd support some TEP's, putting out serious firepower and not being able to be charged.
6 Points, two Initials, flight and "fast", and POW 11 with Flank: Negator
Um, yes please. This thing can easily get itself up to POW 15 or 16. Taking a literal swarm with the new Syntherion setup seems like it could be utterly devastating. I'm having a hard time identifying what caster wouldn't be strong with this. Flank on jacks gets silly and this thing is 6 points. That's two for Requisition options in Clockwork Legions after you take a Corollary, and then you start filling up jack points. I do want to see the rest of the rules but this just seems incredibly powerful based on what we know.

Debbie Downer Time
I have some mild concerns that there will be a few Legacy models left behind in the CID, though I hope that bringing this up will have a few simple changes be addressed:
No Pathfinder out for our Infantry
CoC has two casters that can actually solve Pathfinder issues for our infantry: Aurora 1 and Axis. Neither of them really help protect the rather expensive Enigma Foundry package we need to keep our infantry running. I'm hoping that the Transverse Enumerator will get Pathfinder as an option to give out turn to turn. They are FA:3 so they limit the ability to spam it everywhere, and it gives a reason to take the UA that largely gets ignored a lot these days.
Primarily this just lets us play infantry in a variety of casters that would otherwise get ignored and it requires a tax to take it. It's an easy way to open up new options in list design for a limited faction that doesn't appear to really break anything by allowing up to 3 units to be able to pay for the ability to get Pathfinder.
Modulator Guns
Most of the new electric guns are coming in at POW12 base, which means the Conflux can up the damage to POW14 with some hoops and well, a 33 point conflux. The Modulator being taken up to POW12 base would be a real quality of life improvement, especially since the new Tesselator starts at that and brings more shots at only 1" shorter range. We still don't know point costs for the Tesselator so this could just be moot, but I'd love to see the Modulator get a bit of a boost while keeping it's value at 10 points.

Monday is going to be awesome, I can't wait to see all the new rules. I intend to get playtest games in as well as post at least the Pathfinder concern above in the general feedback group Overall I'm stoked to see what can be done and I'm trusting the process to get us what looks like will be awesome releases.

Why You Should Allow Backseat Gaming (Monday Musings 81)
FuzzyJCats Twitch Channel
Almost all streamers I've met and have immense respect are really against backseat gaming, so this post is to explore reasons why you should reconsider.
I invite backseat gaming enthusiastically because I do need help in games and I don't care if someone says to watch out for x and y even if I'm aware of those particular issues, as well as for other reasons as will be explored below.
Albeit, I don't like story spoilers because other viewers may not know what happens in the end and you really don't want to spoil things. Unfortunately, I've made mistakes during stream where I inadvertently divulged which I then have to apologize.
Of course, I'm not talking about allowing toxic backseat gaming where your viewers are saying that you're a complete loser and waste of space because you missed a secret in game, or other hateful statements.
Rather, I'm talking about the kind of backseat gaming when your viewers are very excited and enthusiastic about the game and offer tips and suggestions, which then spark a discussion in the community about best weapons, best builds and other gaming matters. This may lead to much needed conversational threads and sense of camaraderie amongst your viewers, since dead air is a death knell.
When new viewers come in and see friendly exchanges about the game in chat, they see that the stream is active and "not dead", and might even join in the lively conversation because they may feel compelled to put in their own two cents.
Now, if you're streaming just for the hobby and you don't care at all about viewers or streaming income, and you absolutely can't stand back seating, by all means, do prohibit it in your streams and ban/timeout anyone who doesn't follow your rules.
However, if you're interested in growing your channel and wanting to get some pocket money from your streaming endeavors, I would consider not just allowing backseat gaming, but perhaps even encouraging.
The key objection to backseat gaming is that it spoils the experience for you as a streamer, but the point is, you're streaming for your audience, not for yourself! Recall that streaming is a form of entertainment.
Another reason is that subconsciously, the streamer wants to figure things out which will make them seem clever to the community to stroke your own ego, but who cares? I found by listening and understanding others (rather than trying to impress by seeming clever and accomplished), people have found me "fun".
I'm emphatically not being a home body, but because I spend hours asking questions about their favorite subjects, such as their children (even as my eyes glaze over, I hate to admit), they enjoy talking to me.
That's not to compliment myself, because the reality is, people want to be seen and heard, and if you give them the platform, they find you absolutely charming.
Next time at a party of strangers, just listen and ask pertinent questions, that person will find you riveting and will talk to you for hours if you let them - they will never make a questionable excuse that they have to go home and feed their cats. Don't be surprised if that person tells their friend that they would like to get to know you better.
Why do people backseat game? There are many reasons, but the main one is because they're very enthusiastic about the game and want to show how much they know, as people want to be seen as intelligent, knowledgeable and helpful, even as backseat gaming grates on almost everyone's nerves. People love to show off and/or share their knowledge and expertise.
Next, what is the purpose of entertaining an audience, of which streaming is a form? People engage in entertainment to have fun and feel good. What better way to do that by allowing your audience to actively participate, and hence feeling good about themselves for being smart, helpful and capable!
Often, when I ask my community what to do in a particular situation or how to get to a certain location due to my horrific sense of directions, they always give me superb advice which adds to chat content.
By telling your viewers how helpful and intelligent they are - and you're not lying because they are exceedingly astute since they also play these games, often spending hundreds to thousands of hours - they feel good about themselves and a sense of accomplishment. Though I think I exhausted some of my viewers when they were giving me directions, so perhaps something I have to dial down in the future. But in general, viewers do enjoy being seen as smart.
The exciting thing is that through the power of backseat gaming, my community literally pushed me through half of Borderlands 2, which is no small feat, given I never succeeded in any FPS! At that time, I could complete Borderlands 2 but it was too mentally exhausting for me to stream since I was inexperienced. Even so, I know I can beat the game off-stream (or even while streaming when I gain more experience) thanks to my lovely community.
The other good thing about allowing backseat gaming is that no one likes to follow rules - freedom here is the key - so if you have a long list of don'ts, it can led to a sense of suffocation. Then there's the inevitable backlash where they do exactly what you don't want them too.
So often, when you hear someone say "Whatever you do, don't touch that", you're going to want to touch said offensive object, even if in one million years, you'd never think of touching it.
As for objections, I'm sure streamers feel that if they allow backseat gaming, everyone will tell the streamer what to do and the chat will be a chaotic mess. This is actually good since Twitch specifically looks for engaged and active chats! This is Partnership material!
However, don't get excited, because the reverse is true. There are times when I'm practically begging chat to help me find a way, but because they're used to the general etiquette of backseat gaming = bad, they only relent after quite a lengthy period of time, when I'm tearing out my hair.
The other objection I can see is that other viewers might be annoyed with the advice and tips, but at the same time, they can ignore reading the chat comments. They're not forced to be glued to their seats, eyes trained on your chat box.
However, if your community is reasonable, another one of your viewers (maybe a new one) will invariably chime in that there is yet another way to get there, as well as tease you for bad sense of directions. The dialogue tends to go into other intricacies of the game that foster further comments, which is a must if you want to obtain partnership.
Another reasonable objection is that by stumbling about and the community seeing you figure out things your own way could be entertaining, so backseat gaming will prevent that. Again, because the ethos is backseat gaming = bad, even as I'm encouraging my chat to tell me what to do, crickets are chirping until I flounder for up to 30 minutes, maybe for even longer.
Even so, you can thank the viewer and mention that's very smart, but then mention, you'll try it this other way. This is where you can be clever, by finding another solution then what is recommended, in effect showing off your creativity!
The last objection I can think of is what if your viewers are toxic about backseat gaming? Well, timeout or ban said viewer, exactly as you do for any other type of toxic comments on chat, whether it's bigoted remarks, insulting others, or what not.
I can't think of any further issues or problems in empowering your community to give out advice and tips, only positive ones.
What about you? Do you agree, or do you see pitfalls?

Op Compass Game 8 - Don't Wake The Sergeant
After a few games clearing forts it was time to get back in the open desert, pack away those almost indestructible Matildas and break out the wafer thin armoured early Cruiser Tanks. Here is the scenario / orbat and AAR of Game 8 of our Op Compass Campaign.
A9 Cruiser Tanks |
https://yarkshiregamer.blogspot.co.uk/2018/04/opcompass-1940-resource-page.html
The games are based on an excellent book by Robert Avery which is available from The Toofatlardies, there is a direct link to purchase the book on the Resource Page.We use 28mm figures with this scenario taking place on an 12 x 6 table using a home brew set of rules, based on Iron Ivans Disposable Hero's.
A10 Cruiser Tank |
The Italian troops in the area had been bottled up in Sidi Barrani and the British paused to reorganise before making their attacks on the afternoon of the 10th December 1940. The defenders crumbled quickly and by night fall the last defenders of the town were pinned back to the sea.
Our game represents an attack by the Cruiser Tanks of 6 RTR against this final line of Italian troops. The original attack happened during the hours of darkness, I have decided to run the game under normal daylight rules.
Table Set Up and Terrain
The photo above shows the table, we are playing on the full 12 x 6 layout. A flat area of desert with some undulating sand dunes and some areas of Scrub, a track runs down one edge of the table. I added two buildings post photo one in the far top right of the table and a second to the left of the green hill.
The following Special Rules are in force (see Resource Page for full details)
Bad Going
Breakdown
Italian Prisoners - when Italian Infantry become pinned roll 1d6, on a 5 or 6 the unit surrenders, add +2 to the die roll per additional pin. Once surrendered the unit will March towards the British entry point, it must be accompanied by a British Unit (within 9") until it leaves the table. 1 Tank can safely escort or hold 20 Figures of Italians. Once the prisoners leave the table the vehicles can resume normal duties.
Italian Artillery Crew Morale - they do not take morale tests and fight to the last man.
Dunes - all the hills are soft sand, any bad going rolls made on the hills are subject to a one shift on the dice. I.e. a roll of 3 and 4 on two d6 would not normally bog a vehicle down but a dune, the 3 is modified to a 4 to make it a double 4.
Italian Prisoners (marked with white counter) March towards the British |
With the fall of the forts it's a case of mopping up the last bits of resistance in the area, Intel suggests there are some small Infantry units supported by a decent amount of Artillery. Be careful, your tanks are thinly armoured and not that reliable !
Squadron HQ 1 x A10 Cruiser Tank and 1 x A10 CS Tank
1st Troop - 3 x A9 Cruiser Tanks
2nd Troop 3 x A10 Cruiser Tanks
You have a two fold objective, One, destroy all the Italian Guns (Artillery and Anti Tank) and two, capture (alive) the Italian Captain who is sound asleep in the house at the opposite end of the table.
All units enter the table on the track, in column from the bottom left hand corner of the table (as viewed in the photo above).

Italian Briefing
The lakes of Northern Italy seem a distant dream now and you long for home as this war goes from bad to worse.
You are in Command of a group of mixed Guns supported by some infantry units. Morale in the foot soldiers remains very low and you know they could break at any point. The pride in the Artillery units gives you some confidence but this is going to be a long day.
The Commander sleeps soundly whilst his driver waits outside. |
1 x HQ 2 Figures with Staff Car
4 x 10 man Infantry Squads each with 1 Sgt with SMG and 9 Rifles
2 x 47mm Anti Tank Guns and crew
2 x 65mm Infantry Guns and crew
2 x 75mm Fields Gun and crew
Free set up, all units begin the game hidden.
Italian Anti Tank Gun |
The Italians set up with some infantry in the forward house, the oasis and the long sand dune, the final squad was guarding the Commander, the first three to act as Art observers. The Artillery was set up by the Commanders house whilst the Anti Tank Guns were both on the long sand dune. The Infantry Guns were split, One near the Oasis and one in the far top left palm grove.
Italian Infantry spotting for the guns |
In what was going to be the first of many mechanical issues for the British one of the A10s broke down on the turn of the first event card.
A couple of A9s quickly located one of the Italian Squads.
Some sustained MG fire from the two tanks persuaded the Infantry to surrender and it was round 1 to the British.
It wasn't all plain sailing for the Brits as Italian Guns rained shells down on the advancing tanks.
Things got a little hairy for the prisoners (and the A9s) when some random Artillery rounds landed close by.
It wasn't long before the Italian Artillery hit home as a 75mm shell landed on the roof of one of the A10s.
One of the A9s located some Italian Infantry at the last minute hidden by the Oasis and was safe in the knowledge that they only had rifles.
What they didn't see was the Anti Tank Gun hidden in the dunes behind the Infantry.
The first line of the Italian positions were clear after the Infantry in the house surrendered and the remaining 6 British Tanks advanced towards their objectives.
The CS Tank remained near the base line, it's ranged capability allowed it to both support the attack with its 3 inch Howitzer and remain near the base line to escort the prisoners away.
The Brits approached the last Italian positions and we were in for an exciting conclusion.
The slower moving A10 Tanks ended up in a cross fire from the Anti Tank Guns on the dunes around the Commanders house, the Infantry Gun in the Palm Grove and the indirect Artillery. It didn't end well for the British who lost two tanks in quick succession (see first photo), One A10 was lost to an Artillery round which went off under it's right side track turning it over, the other from an Infantry Gun shell in its side (boy those Cruisers are thinly armoured)
It wasn't all Team Italy though and the remaining Anti Tank Guns were taken out by the British machine guns.
It was desperate stuff, the Italians only had one spotter left for two Artillery pieces and as a last ditch defensive move one of the 75mm guns exposed itself to the machine guns so it could fire over open sights.
Just at that moment the above A9 set off to get a better shooting position at the gun, only it didn't move, years ground and engine smoked but it was completely broken.
The British had three tanks left now but the A10 CS was about 10 feet in table distance from the action and the other remaining A10 was bogged down near it's destroyed friends which just left 1 A9, the ever dependable "Arnold".
In a rather unfortunate twist of fate as the final A9 advanced towards it's final objective an Event Card draw came up, it was a breakdown, the British roll for how bad it was, a 6 was rolled, total mechanical break down and a very rare total victory for the Italian Forces.
So a 4 point victory for the Italians narrowing the scores for the campaign to a single game span, British 18 Italian 14.
Another extremely close game, both sides had chances to win. On table now is our traditional WW1 Mesopotamia game, expect some more Compass early in the new year.
